Trains and Helicopters: A Thrilling Journey to Kaikoura
Trains and helicopters took center stage on our travel from Christchurch to Kaikoura, making for one of the most exciting travel days yet!
Coastal Pacific Train: A Scenic Ride Along the Coast
We boarded the Coastal Pacific Train early in the morning, just in time to catch the sunrise over the hills as we rolled out of Christchurch. The route took us along rugged coastlines, remote beaches, and between towering mountains and the sea. Having a nice breakfast on the train while listening to the narrated tour of the landscape was a charming and relaxing way to start the day. The views were absolutely breathtaking, and it was one of those moments where we felt lucky to just sit back and soak it all in.
Whale Watching with a Twist
Upon arriving in Kaikoura, we were originally scheduled for a whale-watching tour by boat, but high seas and long wait times threw a wrench in that plan. Thankfully, Mike called an audible, and we ended up nabbing a private helicopter tour (Top and Tail Tour)—a decision that turned out to be one of the best of the trip!
Our pilot, Simon, whisked us out over the ocean, where we spotted two massive sperm whales cruising far offshore. From above, they looked like submarines, their sheer size even more impressive from the air. The helicopter ride was exhilarating, offering a completely different perspective on the vast, deep blue below.
After watching the whales, Simon took us up to the top of the mountain range, where he landed on a small outcropping. We were able to step out, walk around, and listen for the mountain deer. There was even a little snow left up there, adding to the silent, magical atmosphere as we looked down on the valley and sea. It felt like we were on top of the world.
Hapuku Lodge: A Hidden Gem
After our adventure-packed day, we checked into Hapuku Lodge, which quickly became our favorite accommodation of the trip so far. The spacious, well-appointed room was a dream, and the overall atmosphere of the lodge made us feel instantly at home.
Still full of energy, we took a walk along a wooded path near the property. Along the way, we came across a large group of deer and a few friendly horses in a field. The horses even let us feed them some grass and give them a few pats—such a sweet and unexpected moment!
A Perfect End to a Perfect Day
The evening was capped off with our best dinner yet—a meal featuring delicious, fresh, local fish, perfectly prepared. It was an absolute treat, and we already started dreaming of returning to Hapuku Lodge in the future. If you ever find yourself in Kaikoura, this place is an absolute must!
All in all, this day had everything—stunning landscapes, thrilling adventure, amazing wildlife, and incredible hospitality. We’ll be talking about it for years to come!
