Exploring Rotorua: Redwoods, Maori Culture & Black Swans

Our day started with another lovely meal at Hapuku Lodge, and we have to give a special shout-out to the sourdough—its amazing texture and taste got us off to the perfect start!

From there, we hopped on a domestic Air New Zealand flight to Rotorua on the North Island. The flight was smooth, and we were treated to breathtaking aerial views of the top of the South Island as we made our way north.

Walking Among Giants: The Redwood Forest

Upon landing in Rotorua, we took a leisurely drive around town before stopping at the Redwood Forest to experience the canopy walkway—a network of suspension bridges connecting the massive trees. Walking among these towering redwoods was both exhilarating and peaceful, and it immediately reminded us of the forest moon of Endor from Star Wars. We half-expected Ewoks to pop out at any moment!

They also host an evening lantern event where intricate, glowing lanterns of various sizes hang throughout the trees. They were already beautiful during the day, but we can only imagine how truly magical the forest must look at night!

Maori Culture & Bubbling Hot Pools

After our tree walk adventure, Neil took us to an authentic Maori village, where we got a close-up look at the community meeting space. Though we couldn’t enter, we admired the intricate carvings adorning the structure. The designs reminded us of the other Polynesian cultures we’ve encountered on our travels, showcasing deep connections across the region.

Rotorua is actively volcanic, and the smell of sulfur is a constant reminder of the geothermal activity beneath our feet. Hot pools of water bubble up in unexpected places throughout the town—even right next to people’s homes! It was surreal to see steam rising from random outcroppings as we explored.

Lakeside Serenity at Black Swan Lodge

That evening, we checked into Black Swan Lodge, and it more than lived up to its name. Set on the bank of beautiful lake Rotorua, we watched multiple black swans glide gracefully across the water, adding a serene and almost cinematic touch to the evening.

After a delicious dinner and a good night’s rest, we were fully prepared for our final adventure with Neil—a visit to the legendary Hobbiton! Stay tuned! 😊
