Exploring Milford Sound: Waterfalls, Wildlife, and One Brave Soaking
Today marked the start of the next leg of Jenny and Mike’s Excellent Adventure, as we met up with our guide and driver, Neil. He’s originally from the UK but has called New Zealand home for the past 15 years. Right off the bat, we could tell we were in great hands—Neil has an incredible knowledge of the country, from its social and political landscape to the best hidden spots for snapping photos. In fact, he even leads landscape photography workshops throughout New Zealand and France! Jenny has already picked up some great tips from him.
With Neil at the wheel, we hit the road for a scenic drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound, the most visited attraction in New Zealand. The journey itself was part of the adventure—the winding road took us through rugged mountains and dense beech tree forests, all lush and vibrant. It was the perfect opportunity to swap travel stories and get to know Neil better.
Sailing Through Milford Sound
By afternoon, we arrived and boarded the Fiordland Jewel, a sleek catamaran that would be our floating home for the night. Captain Francis took charge, expertly guiding us through the breathtaking fiord. Thanks to rain the night before, the waterfalls were absolutely roaring, cascading down the towering cliffs. We spotted fur seals lounging on the rocks, and we were in awe of the incredible peaks and sheer rock faces that surrounded us. The native trees, somehow growing directly out of the rock, clung together to form a lush green canopy. Francis explained that after heavy rains, these trees can sometimes lose their grip, causing tree avalanches, where whole sections slide into the water. Luckily, we didn’t witness one firsthand—but the thought of it made us appreciate the raw power of nature even more.
One of the highlights? Francis steered the boat directly into a waterfall! The crew encouraged anyone feeling brave to step outside and feel the spray. Jenny went for it, and you can check out the videos page for that hilarious and refreshing moment. A few even braver souls took it a step further—jumping off the top deck into the chilly water below. We were happy to cheer them on from the comfort of our dry deck chairs!
A Special Celebration & Night on the Water
This wasn’t just any night on the water—it was also our 2nd anniversary, and we couldn’t have imagined a more magical way to celebrate. The stunning scenery, the fresh ocean air, and the sense of adventure made it an unforgettable occasion.
After mooring, we hopped on a tender boat for a closer look at the rugged landscape, getting an even greater appreciation for the untouched beauty of Milford Sound. Dinner on board was a cozy, communal affair, where we got to know the other 18 passengers—most of whom were fellow Americans. Our cabin for the night was tiny but comfortable, and with the boat gently rocking, we slept soundly under the southern sky.
Morning Cruising & Onward to Fiordland National Park
The next morning, we enjoyed one last cruise around Milford Sound, soaking in the early light on the water as we sipped our coffee. Breakfast on board was relaxed and delicious, the perfect way to end our stay.
As we stepped off the boat, Neil was there, waiting and ready to whisk us away to our next stop—Fiordland National Park. Another adventure awaits!
